Are you going on a Road Trip around central regions of Italy? Here is a Trip Itinerary on what to do and see.

Day 1

>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Take a morning flight to one of the Airports of Rome

[Preferably Ciampino (CIA) that serves budget airlines]

Rent a cheap Italian Car

Stay in a Hotel / Hostel / Guesthouse in Rome

pm hours:

Do Rome Sightseeing

Colosseum – Forum – Pantheon etc...

Late pm hours:

Have Pizza by the lit Fontana di Trevi

Day 2

am hours:

Visit the Vatican

Dress code to the Vatican: no shorts or bare shoulders.

First Visit:

9:00am

-The Vatican Museums

M-Sa 09:00-18:00 (last tickets at 16:00).

One of the greatest art galleries in the world, the museum is most famous for its spiral staircase, the Raphael Rooms and the exquisitely decorated Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo's frescoes. It's organised in such a way that the visitor has to follow a one-way route; do see it! Don't put it off, because the Sistine Chapel closes before the rest of the museum does!

€16, Concessions €8.

There are often lengthy queues from the entrance that stretch around the block. Non-guided visitors should join the queue that is to the left as you are facing the entrance; the queue on the right is intended for guided group visitors.

You can book on-line for admission only (no tour) for an extra €4pp and still skip the queue.

Accessing the Sistine Chapel requires walking through many other (spectacular) halls and buildings (including the Raphael's Rooms and the Map room) and it takes about an hour.

Also, be aware that it is not allowed to take pictures or to talk loudly in the Sistine Chapel (although everybody flagrantly violates these rules). While one may agree with this policy or not, the visit would be a much more pleasant one without the guards having to yell out "Shh!" or: "No foto e no video!" every two minutes. The bottom line is: respect the rules and let every visitor enjoy the best of the experience, even if no one else does. If you try to sneak a picture (again, like everyone does), you'll get a bad photograph and a screaming guard as your reward.

Then Visit:

-St. Peter's Basilica [Open: 07:00-19:00 daily]

and

-St. Peter's square

pm:

Castel Sant'Angelo,

09:00-19.00, last entry at 18:30,

Castel Sant'Angelo is the most fascinating building in Rome. The core of the structure began life as the mausoleum of the Emperor Hadrian, built between 135 and 139 AD. Subsequent strongholds were built on top of the mausoleum during the Middle Ages and were in turn incorporated into a residence and castle by the Popes. The building was used as a prison until 1870, but now houses a museum. Opera buffs will be exhilarated to visit the balcony from which Tosca leaps to her death;

Film buffs will recognise it as the setting from the Tom Hanks film “Angels and Demons (Dan Brown)”.

€8.50, with reductions. Roma Pass accepted

Day 5

Pisa Day Trip

Florence (Firenze) >>>>>>>>>>>>>Pisa

1 h 8 min (83.5 km) if you take Road SGC Florence - Pisa - Livorno

The Piazza dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles) is to the north of central Pisa. It's an UNESCO World Heritage site and contains the city's most famous sight.

Torre Pendente (The Leaning Tower)

To climb the Leaning Tower purchase a ticket online: http://www.opapisa.it/en/tickets/buy

Ticket Cost: €17pp

WARNING: the tickets are only good for the Leaning tower and the Cathedral (The Cathedral being a free entry anyway!!!)

-Before climbing the tower leave any bags/luggage in the cloakroom.

-Be careful when walking over the marble surfaces, as they may be slippery.

-The climb lasts approximately 30 minutes. Visitors will be escorted by staff of Opera della Primaziale Pisana.

-Cameras and video cameras may be used.

-It is strictly forbidden to stand under the bells or strike them in any way.

Interestingly enough the famous Pisa leaning tower is not the only one, due of the marshy land that they are built on, there are other 2 towers in Pisa: the Bell Tower of San Nicola Church, near the banks of Arno and the Bell Tower of San Michele of Scalzi Church.

Duomo di Pisa (Cathedral of Pisa). The splendid cathedral, contains artwork by Giambologna, Della Robbia, and other major artists. Fine Romanesque style with double aisles and a cupola, a huge apse mosaic partly by Cimabue, and a fine pulpit by Giovanni Pisano in late Gothic / early Renaissance style.

Battistero (Baptistry). Large round Romanesque dome with many sculptured decorations and a fine view up top; climb this if you want a great view with the Leaning Tower visible in your photos. Arabic-style pavement, pulpit by Nicola Pisano (father of Giovanni), and fine octagonal font. At regular intervals, the ticket-checker-guard at the entrance comes into the baptistery and gives an audio-treat of echo-effect. The guard shouts out few sounds which when echoed sound like pure beautiful music. Do not miss it. You can also cast your inhibitions to the wind, stand by the wall, and sing long notes that turn into chords by yourself, as the echoes go round and round the dome of the building.
